Peacework Cambodia

Each year since 2008 this event is in part dedicated to the victims of the genocide in Cambodia CLICK HERE. Peacework Medical will continue to go to the country of Cambodia to provide a primary care medical clinic in the rural Takao Province. I have personally participated in this and for 5 continual years in Honduras. Each year we help raise funds for medical supplies for the Kymer people whom we will be seeing. We do this by providing a opportunity to consume draft beer all evening for the donation of $10 or more. This is a great way to not have to worry about bringing in beer and coolers, and think of how it plans perfect to provide you with just the right amount of beer for the exact time that you stay for the evening.......I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO PARTICIPATE AND MAKE A GENEROUS DONATION TO THIS EFFORT. More information on Peacework Medical HERE and the service we provide.

OUR MISSION AND LIFE THERE

Hello Everyone,

Afer recently returning from the reconnaisance trip in Cambodia - and I'm happy to report that Peacework Medical Projects has great potential in that country. We felt very welcomed by the people we met, and it seems there will be a strong collaboration with the population we will serve.

There is a need for our work in villages in the Takeo district south of the capital city, Phnom Penh. There are seventeen villages in the area we would serve, and the people who live there have very little access to primary care. Our plan is to reside and work in  one small village, where there is a pagoda with a monastery.

So, in a sort of order, here are the details at this time:

Dates: February of 2010 (or as close to this as flights allow)

Purpose: Rural primary care medicine with health education, treatment and pharmacy on site; 300 pts daily. We will work closely with host country nationals who are supporting our project (medical professionals, logistical support, teachers, cooks, etc)

Accomodations: primitive camping on site;  during transitions, simple indoor accomodations with running water and electricity in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Meals: In the village, there will be local cooks working in the pagoda to keep us fed on work days.  In the two cities (during transitions/tourism) we will enjoy the very simple fare in the guesthouses, however you're always free to leave the group to search for food and adventure on your own! As you would imagine, there is a propensity for rice. In addition, there will be chicken, beef and pork according to our cooks.

Weather: Should be beautiful - it is the dry season, and daytime temps in the low- mid 80's with humidity.

Clothing: Work in scrubs as always, but while in the pagoda, no bare shoulders or thighs..and no hats. Be prepared to remove your shoes often when you enter indoors.

Transportation: One rental van, public regional bus, small airplane to Siem Reap. If you venture around the city on your own, you will likely be in a Tuk Tuk, which is a buggy behind a motorbike, or a taxi.

Cultural/Tourism: Angkor Wat guided tour on the middle weekend; opportunities in Phnom Penh on Day 1: The Royal Palace and a visit to a museum that somberly commemorates the era of the Khmer Rouge genocide.

PAMS WISH LIST OF DONATIONS:

Dear Peacework Volunteers:

Peacework has always been driven by the passion of people dedicated to our simple mission:

To provide basic primary care medical care and health education to those who may otherwise go without.

There really is no other agenda - no religion, politics, or profit.

We pay for our very discounted medicines and materials through fund raising, and that is exactly where the money goes. Discounts are sustained through grant writing and our year to year performance reports to the pharmaceutical clearinghouses.

The PA Foundation of the AAPA has been consistently generous in giving since 2006.

You do not need to be a medical professional to help, although in collecting some of the items listed below it may necessary.

If you are willing to help, please consider participating in any of the
following:

1. Simply write a tax deductible check to "Peacework" and send it to the address at the bottom of this e mail.

2. Collect non medicinal items from hotels, dentists' offices, or "Dollar"
Stores:
a. soap
b. reading glasses
c. toothbrushes (but no toothpaste - too heavy) d. small hygiene related items (like hotel shampoo or lotion)

3. Purchase non Rx items in bulk:
a. ibuprofen, aspirin,  or acetominophen b. throat / cough lozenges (not liquid - too heavy) c. topical steroid or topical anti fungal d. We do not need vitamins this year - I already hit the jackpot.

4. Rx items and medical supplies:

Essentially anything related to primary care medicine is reasonable. Non primary care items, such as OR materials, in-dwelling devices and their care, parenteral feeding tubes, etc.
If you need an official letter from Peacework to request collection of  meds at your office or clinic, please ask.

Non primary care meds are also not needed: cholesterol, psych, ED, HRT, etc

We will package the following properly at our packing event, or if you are not in Phoenix, you will be advised as December nears:
a. non narcotic analgesics, anti-inflamatories, anti-pyretic: both adult and peds
b. antibiotics - adult and peds
c. GI meds, specifically those agents related to acid/gastritis control
d. topical steroids and PO steroids
e. topical anti fungals and PO anti fungals

Materials:

Again, think primary care:

glucometers with strips
BP cuffs - all sizes
urine dip strips
pregnancy tests
ACE wraps

We are OK for betadine and gauze this year.

Finally, please keep an eye on the website for med packing (Dec 13, 2008) and other events that happen here.

Otherwise, if you think of something I have forgotten, just write. Many of you in receipt of this note know all of this very very well...

Thank you for all you do, and for being a part of this small miracle.

love to all from Peacework Medical,
Pam
